They are fitted with safety devices such as overfill protection valves, and usually sit in the back of your boot. This is mounted on your car near the petrol filler. The one-way safety valves prevent spills and ensure refueling is safe and easy. As most LPG Autogas vehicles are dual fuel, they can switch between petrol and Autogas at a flick of a switch, which is normally located on the dash.
What is LPG used for? How does it work? The liquid fuel converts into vapour and is then mixed with air before going into the intake manifold. Electrically controlled injectors improve the metering of fuel to the engine, fuel economy and power, and reduce emissions. This substantially increases power output, improves fuel economy and has lower emission, when compared to VPI systems. The LPG instantly vaporises, cooling the combustion chamber fuel-air mixture during the compression stroke.
An Electronic Control Unit ECU controls the various components of the liquid injection system, including the injectors. This inforgraphic, courtesy of The Zebra , shows how an LPG vehicle works with a 4-stroke engine cycle on Autogas or petrol:. Diesel CO 2 emissions are If you were caught out, your car would simply switch back over to petrol automatically.
If your car is not fuel efficient, then converting to LPG is certainly worth considering. If the initial outlay is making you hesitate, then consider that within two years it will have paid for itself if you cover around 15, miles each year.
If you do decide to go for the conversion make sure it is carried out by an approved LPGA approved installer and remember to inform the DVLA to make sure you get the reduction on your road tax.
Also inform your insurance company as having an LPG system fitted is technically classed as a modification, however, you are unlikely to see any increase in the cost of your cover. We would love to hear from those of you who have made the change and hear your views on it. Please comment below. LPG is the way forward.
I have a 3. Only time i notice the slight drop in performance is when the car switches back to unleaded when the LPG is exhausted. Car has done , miles most of it on LPG and the engine is as good as the day it was new. Damn it, should not have said that. I have probably put a curse on it now. Thanks for your input which will hopefully help other readers decide whether they should convert or not.
